The Emperor's Old Clothes

Of course we all already knew that Donald Trump is a hateful dolt. That there’s a shrewdness about him, a reptilian drive for dominance that has gotten him to this point, doesn’t change the obviously evident reality. Now we have documentary evidence that all of the White House staff (not the sharpest of tacks to begin with) and all of the leading Republicans also assess him to be an idiot.

Hoping for the best, with their personal futures as well as the country's future depending on it, my indelible impression of talking to [Donald Trump's small staff of factotums, advisors and family] and observing them through much of the first year of his presidency, is that they all — 100 percent — came to believe he was incapable of functioning in his job.

So now, when the “President’s” spokespeople blatantly lie on his behalf, will the corporatized press call them on it? Will the press insist upon the truth and not relent, will they call a lie a lie and tell the spokespeople to their faces that they can’t be believed? Or alternately will the press stop going to press conferences because otherwise they’re legitimizing the spokesliars with professional reporters’ presence?

When cabinet members and congresspeople tonguebathe the “President” with absurdly false glorifications, will the press call them on it as well? Will the press ask them how these politicians can refuse to remove such an unfit chief executive from office, posthaste?

We all know what’s going on. Everybody knows. But no, they’ll keep pretending. Doomed as we are to follow this stupidest of timelines, as in the fable, multitudes of naive little children and great masses of townspeople can shout out ‘til they’re hoarse that the emperor is naked, and it won’t matter. The parade will go on.
