[Oct. 6: Some states’ information corrected below]
Nov. 6th, 2018 may be democracy’s last stand against fascism in America, no exaggeration. Make sure that everyone you know who so much as might think about voting for Democrats is registered. Have that awkward phone call with friends and relatives who aren’t all that political. Think for a sec about why it’s so important to you personally to turn the House and Senate Democratic. Think about what thing you can say that might be persuasive to the people you know well. Appeal to morality, keep it brief, personalize your delivery. Before you call, look up the state registration requirements for them. Be persuasive and effective.
Set aside the time today to do it. Go through your contacts list. Pick five, or even just one, to contact. Though we’re building a civic culture in the USA almost from scratch, this is how it starts. And not a moment too soon.
Due Sunday, October 7th: Due Monday, October 8th: Due Tuesday, October 9th:Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi†, Montana**, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas
Due Wednesday, October 10th:The rules vary by state. In many states, the deadline is for receipt of the registration form. Some states have online, mail-in, and in-peson registration options. If the people you call have to submit a paper form, it may be too late in the first three states above to mail it and be sure, so they would need to hand-deliver it. Democracy is worth it! #DontGetSchlonged
All 50 states’ voter registration deadlines are available at Headcount.org (some information at that link is over-simplified, so double-check).
